Final expense insurance for diabetics
Final expense (sometimes called burial insurance) is a smaller whole life policy designed to cover funeral costs, small debts and end-of-life expenses. For diabetic applicants, especially those over 55 or those who have been declined for larger policies, final expense is one of the most reliable paths to approval.
What final expense looks like
- Face amount. Coverage from $15,000 to $100,000.
- Policy type. Whole life. Premiums do not increase. The policy builds a small cash value over time.
- Underwriting. Simplified-issue or guaranteed-issue. No medical exam. A short health questionnaire and a prescription history check.
- Issue ages. Typically 50 to 85, some carriers go younger or older.
- Beneficiary. Pays directly to whoever you name, free from federal income tax. Can be used for any purpose.
How carriers evaluate diabetic final expense applications
Level benefit (immediate full coverage). Well-controlled Type 2 applicants, often with A1C under 8, no insulin, no complications. Carriers write this at the best final expense rates and the full death benefit is payable from day one.
Graded benefit. Diabetics with insulin use, higher A1C, or some complications. The policy pays a percentage of the face amount during the first two years (often 30% to 70%, carrier-specific) and the full face amount after. Rates are higher than level.
Modified benefit / guaranteed-issue. Available regardless of health. Two or three year waiting period during which the policy returns premiums plus interest if death is from natural causes. Accidental death is covered from day one. This is the floor and nearly every applicant qualifies.
What final expense is good for
- Making sure your family does not have to pay for a funeral out of pocket.
- Covering a small outstanding debt or medical bill.
- Leaving a modest inheritance.
- Building a reliable foundation of coverage when larger policies are not available.
Many of our diabetic clients carry a final expense policy alongside a term policy or a simplified-issue life policy. The two serve different purposes.
Common questions
How much does final expense cost for a diabetic?
Rates depend on age, gender, health and whether the policy is level, graded or guaranteed-issue. A healthy diabetic in their 60s might see a $20,000 level benefit policy for around $75 to $125 per month. These are estimates. Specific quotes depend on the carrier and your file.
Can I be declined for final expense?
You can be declined for level or graded benefit versions, usually for severe health issues or recent cardiovascular or kidney events. Guaranteed-issue final expense accepts almost every applicant in the age range.
What if I die during the waiting period on a graded or modified policy?
The carrier returns your paid premiums plus interest to your beneficiary. Some policies pay a percentage of the face amount; some pay only premiums. The exact terms are in each policy's contract and we walk you through them before you buy.
