Life insurance on Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy or Zepbound
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Zepbound are often viewed favorably by life insurance carriers right now. The underwriting world has shifted on these drugs over the last two years. If you are taking one, it may actually help your application rather than hurt it.
Why GLP-1 use often helps
- The medication demonstrates active management of a condition the carrier would otherwise rate up.
- Many patients see a meaningful drop in A1C within six to twelve months, which pushes them into a better rate class.
- Weight loss, when it happens, improves the build rating that most carriers run alongside the diabetes rating.
- Cardiovascular benefits documented in the clinical trials for these drugs are showing up in some underwriting guidelines as a positive factor.
What matters most
Why it was prescribed. GLP-1s used to treat Type 2 diabetes read differently than GLP-1s used for weight loss alone. For diabetes, carriers see it as the kind of care they want to see. For weight loss alone, the underwriting is based on build and the condition the drug is treating.
Side effects or hospitalizations. Severe gastrointestinal side effects, pancreatitis or gallbladder events reported on your records can change the picture.
How long you have been on it. Six to twelve months of use with a documented A1C drop and a stable dose is the sweet spot for showing the underwriter a trend.
A1C and build before and after. Bring your readings. The before-and-after picture tells the story faster than any form question.
When GLP-1 use may not help
- If you started the drug very recently (less than three months) and there is no A1C trend yet.
- If you are using a compounded or non-FDA-approved version. Carriers may ask about this.
- If the medication is listed on your records for an off-label use the carrier views as higher risk.
What to tell us when you call
Which GLP-1 you are on, how long you have been on it, your A1C before you started and your most recent reading, your current weight and any side effects you have had. With those five pieces of information, we can usually tell you within a few minutes which rate class range to expect.
Common questions
Will my insurance company ask about Ozempic specifically?
Yes. Underwriters ask about all current medications. Being honest and ready with your dose and start date is the right move. Trying to hide it is not.
Is Wegovy underwritten differently than Ozempic?
Same molecule (semaglutide), different FDA approval (Wegovy for weight loss, Ozempic for Type 2 diabetes). Carriers look at the clinical indication on your record, not just the brand name.
Can I drop my coverage cost by being on a GLP-1?
Sometimes, yes. A documented A1C drop over six to twelve months can move you into a better rate class on your next application. We often rework existing clients' policies after a successful year on a GLP-1.
