No-exam life insurance for diabetics
Many modern life insurance policies no longer require a medical exam. For diabetic applicants, no-exam options can be the fastest path to coverage. They are not always the cheapest, and they are not always the best fit, but they fill a specific need very well.
Three kinds of no-exam coverage
Tele-underwritten fully-approved. A 20-minute phone interview replaces the paramedical exam. The carrier still pulls your medical records and runs a prescription history check. These policies offer standard to preferred rates for applicants who qualify, with face amounts up to several hundred thousand dollars. For many Type 2 diabetics with A1C under 8 and no complications, this is a strong path.
Simplified-issue. A short set of yes/no health questions, no exam, no full records review. Approvals usually come back within days. Face amounts are typically $50,000 to $500,000. Rates are higher than fully-underwritten but lower than guaranteed-issue. Many Type 1 and higher-A1C Type 2 applicants fit here.
Guaranteed-issue. No health questions at all. The only underwriting is age and sometimes residency. Face amounts are usually $25,000 to $50,000. There is a two or three year waiting period before the full death benefit is payable. This is the floor option, available even to applicants who have been declined everywhere else.
Which no-exam option fits
- Well-controlled Type 2, A1C under 7.5, no complications: tele-underwritten fully-approved is usually the best deal.
- Type 1 or Type 2 with higher A1C or recent complications: simplified-issue often opens the right doors.
- Applicants who have been declined before or who want coverage without any health questions: guaranteed-issue is the dependable path.
The tradeoffs
No-exam coverage is faster. Fully-underwritten coverage is often cheaper. The right pick depends on how much you want to insure, how quickly you need coverage, and how well your current health reads to an underwriter.
For most diabetic applicants, we quote both a fully-underwritten carrier and a no-exam alternative, so you can compare the real cost and the real approval odds side by side before you apply.
Common questions
Will a no-exam policy pay out immediately if I die?
Fully-approved no-exam and simplified-issue policies pay out the full death benefit from day one. Guaranteed-issue policies have a two or three year waiting period during which only paid premiums are returned if death is from natural causes. Accidental death is covered from day one on most GI policies.
Can I get a million dollars of coverage without an exam?
Yes, in some cases. Several carriers offer tele-underwritten policies up to $1 million and sometimes higher for applicants under 60 with clean health histories. For diabetic applicants, the cap is often lower.
Will I pay more without an exam?
Sometimes. The convenience often comes with a slightly higher premium. The difference depends on your age, health, and the carrier. We quote both sides so you can see the number.
